Tapered Roller Bearings

High-Performance Tapered Roller Bearings

Tapered roller bearings are found wherever machinery faces serious combined loading. Axles, gearboxes, wheel hubs, conveyor systems, agricultural equipment and construction machinery all rely on them. They are the bearing of choice across automotive, industrial manufacturing and renewable energy applications because they manage both radial and axial forces within a single, compact assembly.

What are Tapered Roller Bearings?

The design is built around conical rollers running on tapered raceways. The inner and outer rings, the cone and cup, are machined so that all projected lines converge at a single point along the bearing axis, which is what allows the bearing to resolve combined loads efficiently rather than at a point contact. This geometry creates a larger contact area than spherical bearings, enabling tapered roller bearings to carry greater loads.

The cone assembly comprises the inner ring, rollers and cage. The cage keeps rollers evenly spaced during operation, whilst a rib on the inner ring controls alignment and contributes to load capacity. Cup and cone are separable, so individual components can be replaced without disturbing the full assembly, a practical advantage when bearings are running in difficult environments.

Load capacity is set by the contact angle. A steeper angle increases axial force tolerance; a shallower angle favours radial loads. Tapered roller bearings allow for clearance adjustment during installation, which can be tuned to enhance shaft stiffness and running accuracy. Single row tapered roller bearings are typically adjusted against a second bearing to establish preload, and installed in pairs where axial loads act in both directions.

Metric and Imperial Tapered Roller Bearings

We stock tapered roller bearings in both metric and imperial sizes. Metric bearings are dimensioned by inside diameter, outside diameter and width in mm, the standard for modern industrial machinery and European automotive applications. Imperial bearings use inch-based measurements and are commonly specified in agricultural equipment, classic machinery and North American automotive designs.

Both series are held across a range of section sizes. Individual cups and cones are available separately, so you can replace only the worn component rather than the full assembly. Complete bearing sets are also stocked for specific applications such as trailer hubs.

Leading Brands: Timken and Koyo

George Lodge Direct are authorised distributors for both Timken and KOYO tapered roller bearings. That means genuine manufacturer stock and full product traceability.

Timken Tapered Roller Bearings: Timken holds the original patent on the tapered roller bearing design and remains the benchmark for the category. Their bearings are built for fatigue life and reliability under sustained heavy loading, the reason they are specified as standard in demanding automotive and industrial applications.

KOYO Tapered Roller Bearings: KOYO are a preferred supplier to original equipment manufacturers across the automotive and manufacturing sectors. Their tapered roller bearings are precision-engineered for consistent performance, low friction and durability across a wide operating range.

Both ranges are held in stock at our Hull warehouse, with same-day despatch on orders placed before 4pm.

Specialised Bearing Solutions

Beyond the standard single row range, we stock several configurations for applications with specific requirements.

Sealed Tapered Roller Bearings: The sealed outer ring prevents contamination from dust, moisture and debris, reducing maintenance intervals in agricultural, construction and outdoor industrial applications where exposure is unavoidable.

Tapered Roller Thrust Bearings: Built to manage heavy axial loads acting in a single direction. Commonly specified in steering pivots, heavy-duty jacks and similar applications where axial force dominates.

Double Row Tapered Roller Bearings: Where load capacity or rigidity requirements exceed what a single row bearing can provide, double row bearings carry combined radial and axial loads in both directions within a more compact arrangement.

Trailer Bearing Kits: Pre-packed sets for axle maintenance. Kits contain the matched cup and cone components for a specific application, removing the need to source parts individually.

For other bearing types including deep groove ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings and needle roller bearings, see our full bearings range.
