What are Needle Roller Bearings?

Needle roller bearings are a type of roller bearing that uses cylindrical rollers with a length significantly greater than their diameter, typically a length-to-diameter ratio of 4:1 or higher. The slim profile of the rollers allows the bearing to carry heavy radial loads within a much smaller cross section than a comparable ball or cylindrical roller bearing. This compact design is the primary reason needle roller bearings are specified in equipment where shaft diameter or housing dimensions are limited.

The line contact between the rollers and the raceway distributes load along the full length of the roller, giving needle bearings excellent radial load capacity at moderate speeds. Most configurations are designed for radial loads only, although axial needle roller bearings are available for applications where thrust forces are present.

Drawn Cup Needle Roller Bearings

Drawn cup needle roller bearings feature a thin-walled outer cup that acts as the outer raceway, allowing the bearing to be pressed directly into a housing without a separate outer ring. We stock open and closed end configurations in metric and imperial sizes, including HK series open-ended and BK series closed-end variants. The drawn cup design provides a low-cost, space-saving solution for high-volume applications.

Heavy Duty Needle Roller Bearings

Our heavy duty needle roller bearings are available in both metric and imperial configurations. Machined needle roller bearings have thicker, precision-ground outer rings and are designed for higher loads, longer service life and more demanding operating conditions than drawn cup variants. Common applications include industrial gearboxes, automotive transmissions, construction equipment and heavy machinery.

Needle Roller and Cage Assemblies

Needle roller and cage assemblies consist of needle rollers held in a precision cage without integral inner or outer rings. They run directly on a hardened shaft and within a hardened housing bore, providing the most compact bearing arrangement possible. K series roller cage and assembly bearings are widely specified in automotive engines, gearboxes and pumps where space and weight savings are critical.

Combined Needle Roller Bearings

Combined needle roller bearings integrate a radial needle bearing with an axial component, allowing them to carry combined radial and thrust loads in a single compact unit. Common configurations include needle roller and ball bearing combinations, and needle roller and angular contact bearing combinations.

Thrust Needle Roller Bearings

For applications with axial loads, we stock needle roller and cage thrust assemblies in metric (AXK series) and imperial (NTA series) sizes, alongside K811 metric thrust needle bearings with integrated washers. Thrust needle bearings are commonly specified in automotive transmissions, planetary gears and high-load axial applications.

Needle Roller Inner Rings and Clutch Bearings

Needle roller inner rings (IR series) are supplied separately for applications where the shaft cannot be hardened, providing the inner raceway for the needle bearing assembly. We also stock HJ series imperial needle roller bearings and needle roller clutch bearings (HF series) for one-way drive applications including indexing, backstop and overrunning clutch mechanisms.
