Needle Roller Bearings

Needle Roller Bearing Stockist UK

George Lodge Direct are a leading needle roller bearing stockist supplying UK industry as authorised distributors for Timken, KOYO and NSK. Trading from our 20,000 sq ft Hull warehouse since 1880, we supply genuine needle roller bearings in metric and imperial sizes across a comprehensive range of types and applications.

Needle roller bearings are designed to carry significant radial loads in applications where space is restricted. Their long, thin rollers and small cross-section give them a higher load capacity than equivalent ball bearings of similar bore size, making them the bearing of choice in compact assemblies including automotive transmissions, agricultural machinery, industrial gearboxes and small engine components.

What are Needle Roller Bearings?

Needle roller bearings are a type of roller bearing that uses cylindrical rollers with a length significantly greater than their diameter, typically a length-to-diameter ratio of 4:1 or higher. The slim profile of the rollers allows the bearing to carry heavy radial loads within a much smaller cross section than a comparable ball or cylindrical roller bearing. This compact design is the primary reason needle roller bearings are specified in equipment where shaft diameter or housing dimensions are limited.

The line contact between the rollers and the raceway distributes load along the full length of the roller, giving needle bearings excellent radial load capacity at moderate speeds. Most configurations are designed for radial loads only, although axial needle roller bearings are available for applications where thrust forces are present.

Needle Roller Bearings Range

We stock an extensive range of needle roller bearings in both metric and imperial sizes, available for same-day despatch on orders placed before 4pm.

Drawn Cup Needle Roller Bearings

Drawn cup needle roller bearings feature a thin-walled outer cup that acts as the outer raceway, allowing the bearing to be pressed directly into a housing without a separate outer ring. We stock open and closed end configurations in metric and imperial sizes, including HK series open-ended and BK series closed-end variants. The drawn cup design provides a low-cost, space-saving solution for high-volume applications.

Heavy Duty Needle Roller Bearings

Our heavy duty needle roller bearings are available in both metric and imperial configurations. Machined needle roller bearings have thicker, precision-ground outer rings and are designed for higher loads, longer service life and more demanding operating conditions than drawn cup variants. Common applications include industrial gearboxes, automotive transmissions, construction equipment and heavy machinery.

Needle Roller and Cage Assemblies

Needle roller and cage assemblies consist of needle rollers held in a precision cage without integral inner or outer rings. They run directly on a hardened shaft and within a hardened housing bore, providing the most compact bearing arrangement possible. K series roller cage and assembly bearings are widely specified in automotive engines, gearboxes and pumps where space and weight savings are critical.

Combined Needle Roller Bearings

Combined needle roller bearings integrate a radial needle bearing with an axial component, allowing them to carry combined radial and thrust loads in a single compact unit. Common configurations include needle roller and ball bearing combinations, and needle roller and angular contact bearing combinations.

Thrust Needle Roller Bearings

For applications with axial loads, we stock needle roller and cage thrust assemblies in metric (AXK series) and imperial (NTA series) sizes, alongside K811 metric thrust needle bearings with integrated washers. Thrust needle bearings are commonly specified in automotive transmissions, planetary gears and high-load axial applications.

Needle Roller Inner Rings and Clutch Bearings

Needle roller inner rings (IR series) are supplied separately for applications where the shaft cannot be hardened, providing the inner raceway for the needle bearing assembly. We also stock HJ series imperial needle roller bearings and needle roller clutch bearings (HF series) for one-way drive applications including indexing, backstop and overrunning clutch mechanisms.

Needle Roller Bearings: Frequently Asked Questions

What are needle roller bearings used for?

Needle roller bearings are used in applications where heavy radial loads must be carried within a restricted space. Their slim cross-section makes them suitable for automotive transmissions, gearboxes, agricultural machinery, small engines, pumps and industrial equipment where shaft or housing dimensions are limited.

What is the difference between drawn cup and machined needle roller bearings?

Drawn cup needle roller bearings have a thin-walled outer cup that acts as the outer raceway, designed to be pressed directly into a housing. Machined or heavy duty needle roller bearings have thicker, precision-ground outer rings designed for higher loads and longer service life in more demanding applications.

Do you stock metric and imperial needle roller bearings?

Yes. George Lodge Direct stock needle roller bearings in both metric and imperial sizes across all major configurations including drawn cup, heavy duty, combined, thrust, inner rings and clutch bearings. Same-day despatch on orders placed before 4pm from our Hull warehouse.

What is a needle roller and cage assembly?

A needle roller and cage assembly is a needle bearing without integral inner or outer rings. The cage holds the needle rollers in position, and the assembly runs directly on a hardened shaft and within a hardened housing bore. This provides the most compact bearing arrangement available, commonly specified in automotive engines and gearboxes.

Can needle roller bearings handle thrust loads?

Standard radial needle roller bearings are designed for radial loads only. For axial loads, thrust needle roller bearings are available, including AXK metric series, NTA imperial series and K811 metric series with integrated washers. Combined needle roller bearings can also carry both radial and thrust loads in a single unit.

Why Choose George Lodge Direct?

As an ISO 9001 accredited business, our needle roller bearings are supplied with full batch traceability and Certificates of Conformance on every order. We hold over 50,000 bearing lines at our Hull warehouse with direct access to manufacturer warehouses across Europe and the USA. No third-party warehouses in our supply chain.

Same-day despatch on orders placed before 4pm. Free UK mainland delivery. We supply customers across the UK and internationally, including the USA. Our technical team can help identify the correct needle roller bearing by part number, dimensions, or cross-reference from competitor specifications.
